A True Pioneer

28” x 42” Painted in 2003

The supersonic transport Concord 001 made its first flight on March 2, 1969.  This pioneering supersonic transport was to enter scheduled service on the routes of Air France and British Airways on January 21, 1976. The Concorde cut flying times of subsonic jet airliners by half on these routes. Flying at twice the speed of sound, it could fly from New York to London in 3 hours and 17 minutes. It was to serve for nearly thirty years before its high costs led to its retirement and display in aviation museums. The Concorde was the only supersonic airliner in service and was visually unique in that it used the droop nose pioneered by the Fairey FD.2 research aircraft to improve cockpit visibility on landing.

Painted for Popular Mechanics and published in their magazine December 2003
