This tiny and very effective Soviet fighter appeared in prototype form in 1956.  Developed by the respected, Mikoyan & Gurevich Design Bureau, the MiG-21 has served, first with the Soviet Air Force, and subsequently with the many Communist Bloc Countries and others relying on Soviet technology.  Its basic design has been continuously upgraded and the aircraft remains a respected threat to even our most advanced Western Air Forces aircraft after over 40 years.
