The First Atlas ICBM Launched

The First Atlas ICBM Launched

18” by 24” Painted in 1976

On June 11, 1957, the first Atlas ICBM was launched from Cape Canaveral.  Although the flight lasted only 50 seconds, further testing put the Atlas into the USAF inventory.  It was a liquid oxygen-fueled missile and provided many important launches in space flight.  The Atlas powered John Glenn and Friendship 7 into space and headed Ranger, Surveyor and Mariner probes on their way to the Moon, Mars and Venus.  It was phased out of service in 1965 as an ICBM, but a second stage Centaur fueled by hydrogen helped the Atlas/Centaur to continue as a launch vehicle for many more years.
