The original painting was created for the cover of the December 13, 1999 Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine special issue exploring the worlds space launch vehicles likely to compete in the new millennium. The creation of the painting was made possible by the cooperation of AW&ST staff members, Bruce Smith and Craig Covault who arranged for the artist to tour the launch complexes at Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center.
