4534 MPH NORTH AMERICAN (ROCKWELL X-15)

The X-15 holds both the world speed record for aircraft, of 4,534 mph (mach 6.72), attained in 1967, and the altitude record of 354,200 feet (67.08 miles) in 1963.  Three of these liquid fueled rocket engine aircraft were produced for NASA and earned the astronaut rating for its pilots.                              

The XLR-99 engines for the X-15 were built by Reaction Motors of Denville, NJ.
