DeHavilland, Comet I
18” x 24” Painted in 1974
The British De Havilland Comet I, the world’s first turbojet powered airliner, achieved a revolution in air transport by virtually doubling airline operating speeds. First flown in 1949 and operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation, it pioneered today’s routine jet airline travel. The tragic loss of Comet G-ALY over the Mediterranean on 10 January 1954 provided information to all nations leading to safe long term pressurized high altitude commercial flight.
