America’s first man to orbit earth was, then Lt. Colonel (later Senator) John H. Glenn who completed a three-orbit flight in the Project Mercury space capsule “Friendship 7” on February 20, 1962.  The purpose of the flight was to prove the importance of including man’s flying and judgment skills in future space exploration
