Sikorsky R-4 Is Inducted into Service

In January of 1942 the U.S. Army Air Force ordered 30 Sikorsky R-4 helicopters.  This became the first helicopter to enter military service in quantity. The R-4 earned many “firsts”: rescue by a helicopter; long distance flight; mercy mission, combat rescue mission; and first to prove it’s versatility in powered flight.
