The Fairey FD.2 Delta 2
18” by 24” Painted in 1977
The Fairey FD.2 first flew in October 1964 as a supersonic research aircraft to study transonic and supersonic handling characteristics. With Peter Twiss at the controls, the FD.2 set a speed record of 1,132 mph in 1956.
Because the forward visibility was so restricted, the entire cockpit was pitched down 10 degrees for landings. Due to this success, the cockpit design was later to influence the design of the British/French Concorde supersonic transport aircraft.
