On 6 April 1924, four Douglas World Cruisers, took off from Seattle, Washington and on 8 September, 175 days and 26,345 miles later, two of the Cruisers returned to Seattle having completed the first round the world flight. Success of the flight was a tribute to the pilots, logistic support of the U.S. Army Air Service, and the aircraft built by the Donald Douglas Company. One Cruiser had crashed enroute to Alaska, and another was lost in the North Atlantic. The four crewmen were saved. These aircraft established Douglas as a recognized aircraft manufacturer.
