The Clipper Arrives in Paradise
42” wide by 28” painted on canvas for Popular Mechanics Magazine
The subject is Pam Am’s famous, Martin Flying Boat, just touching down off the coast of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Houses rise on stilts from the coastline, looking out at the boats anchored near the shoreline. The soft rounded green mountains loom in the background under the cumulus clouds.
The artist was commissioned to paint five paintings, for publication in Popular Mechanics magazine issue of December, 2003. Together the five paintings would present a pictorial history of the progress of aviation. This beautifully painting captures the essence of Maui in the 1930s.
