The Fouga Magister

The Fouga Magister

18” by 24” Painted in 1976

The Fouga CM.170 has the distinction of being the world’s first basic jet trainer.  It is also the most successful European trainer from a production standpoint.  The prototype first flew in 1952.   With modifications the French-built models in service were over 1,000 and license-production in Finland, Germany and Israel added nearly another 500. The Magister was flown by the Patroulle de France aerobatic team and the Israeli Air Force demonstration flight.  But its greatest measure of success was the fact that it remained in service for over 25 years.
