The Original B1
18” x 24” Painted in 1977
Three prototypes of the B-1 had been completed when the production program for this planned Boeing B-52 replacement was canceled by President Carter. With its four-man crew, the B-1 had a maximum speed of more than Mach 2 and a low-level supersonic dash capability for penetration missions. It was two-thirds the size of the B-52. A modified production program for the B-1B was instituted by the Reagan administration. Approximately 100 are serving in the USAF alongside the aging B-52.
